You Can See Your Visual Field “From the Middle”

Had a very, very interesting experience meditating. Sam said keep eyes open, gaze at a blank-ish surface, try to see the air between you and the surface. see it sort of shimmering. He said “see the visual field as a single sphere of light”. I did this with my ottoman and it worked well. Then I noticed that I could understand my body, glasses frames, face, etc. as being the back wall of this visual sphere that I was experiencing from the center (or some place within that intervene air space), rather than experiencing my eyes as window from which I was looking through from behind. It was a totally unique and unhinging sensation. It was the “having no head” thing, I think. I can sort of instigate it to happen again now by focusing on the air space between my face and the computer monitor.

I can use that sensation as an allegory for the non-existence of the “self”. As the seeing-eyes are to the single, prior visual sphere, the “experiencing self” is to the single, prior consciousness.
