Jordan Hall - Web3: Tech vs The Human Condition. Rebel Wisdom (podcast)
Software eating the world. first phone books/yellow pages. then music: from napster to boomers using mp3s - move from exterior to the periphery (then into the legal world of legal battles). from digital to legal. then for digital moving to the core: money, finance, law, governance, science, etc.
web3: event horizon of digital (software eating the world), crossing into the latter realms above. at societal level - not at human level (not family). What web3 is: it’s just this moment in the long arc of digital taking over all realms. and specifically, this pivot point.
the emergence of the digital, transition from old world to new reaching it pivot point.
web2 was operating within the frame of the political economy. a function of the economy. offering goods and services in the marketplace.
web3 operates on a peerage with governance, law, finance, religion. on the same level. potentially as a competitor.
the power of blockchain - what it can do - and its location: at the heart of finance - establishes its place in the transitionary dynamic. its flourising allowed it to bring all of web3 into the core world. just like http established itself and created the entry point for the rest of web, blockchian establishes the beach head in core.
web3 is not silicon valley.
web3 can steward AI and the Metaverse. they can’t happen on their own. AI has no valence on its own. you don’t want to fiddle with that (it’s like CRISPR). needs a wisdom process. the technological process islargely dominated by unconscious process (at the level of awareness and capacity. particularly in AI and metaverse). Moloch. prisoners’ dillemae and arms races. need a wisdom process.
web3 may have the control structure and ethical process that can help govern the above.
A human-based collective intelligence (as opposed to ai) that has the lift, the strength to move this process up onto a safer plane. (in the analogy where the road is ever-narrowing with catasrohpy on both sides. and we need to go up).
coordination problems:
heirarchical system limitations. one-solution systems) corporations, beuracracies, heirarchies, etc.. limited in: sensemaking, perception, agency. in particular, with capacity with complexity. good at complicated, bad at complex. they necessarily carve a chunk of complexity out and bring itinto the complicated - this loses a lot (re: coordition)
markets: one problem: bias towards unconscious processes. moloch.
third thing, which is totally novel and profound: decentralized orgs have capacity to produce collective intellgience that isn’t limited in way of heirarchical. more people, more fully, more integrated, more perceptions, more agency( how capacity is deployed).
DAOs can mesh in subtle ways. big or small, fluid. how you exist as a person in the world as a whole human is separate from how your energy manifests in projects and groups. project your energy, rather than teleporting your self into a corp container (no personal phone calls on company time). the dao is an interiority, but the people participating in it don’t exist in that interiority, like they would a corporation.
but the moloch problem: the unconscious process problem (we’ll just fix the prisoner’s dilemma with code.)
The code can manage the relationships between DAOs, but within them, it’s people.
byzantine generals problem: creating a consensus of state. of what is.
Dalten and the above problem:
[[permanent-notes/dalten-collective]]❌ has a solution to this. relationship-gated membership
Becoming Artist
The necessity of becoming artist of everyone in the web3 space. the ability to perceive quality and behave accordingly. an improving musician knowing what note to play next.
Live free jazz where everyone must keep playing the right note in order to keep the whole score going. This is a very strange and interesting way of managing complexity.
Moving from engineer –> artist; helps develop the process of becoming a steward. intrinsitcally move towards the collective intelligence. Truly soverign. web3 must become Truly Sovereign.
mine: the money part is just an easily-readable signal (by the legacy world) of what the system is doing and when and if it’s “working” (by legacy world standards). that is necessarily not the value signal for the ultimate gameb/web3 world, as that world cannot use the same financial system as legacy. it is a transitionary system. it follows that at some point we’ll need to leave it behind. will this be slow and steady and peaceful? or rough and fast and scary?
