Meditations; Marcus Aurelius (book)

I was enjoying this book until I got to the passage where he essentially says that the gods would never let anything bad happen; death can’t be bad because the gods wouldn’t do that to us, if there really were no gods then everything would be pointless.

How can I appreciate the rest of the book when this ontology is at the base layer of all his treatment of meaning? It really killed it for me and I realized I haven’t gone back to it since.

I tried to pick it up again recently and come to peace with this position of his, but it’s tough.
