At the end of the workday, perform a shut-down ritual and allow in zero work-related influence into your attention afterwards.
Do the following
- Per outstanding task, either:
- Have a teed-up plan for it that you can trust will complete the task in the future.
- OR: Capture the task to a reliable list which will ensure it is revisited later
- After doing the above for all tasks, say aloud something to the effect of “Shut down complete!”
Seriously. The ritualized, per formative, multi-sensory approach will eventually become a cue to your brain that it is free from workday responsibilities and can begin recharging in peace.
Because you’re trying to nurture the above trust, you must not allow workday distractions back into your attention between the hours of shutdown and re-start. not even a glance.
