In 2020, there is an apparent abundance of “baddies” roaming society (white nationalists, anarchists, etc). But these anomalous ideologues have always been present - if you have a functioning immune system, you don’t know about the pathogens in the system.

The New York Times hired a lot of “hip” campus-types in an attempt to stave off their institutional ageing. The paper hoped that these new hires would eventually become more standardly-liberal and moderate once they acquired significant others, children and mortgages. But that didn’t happen, and instead they took over the culture of the institution.
