Five million years of brain evolution resulted in an inner lawyer who seeks confirming evidence of what we want to believe. Contrary to what we may want to think, we do not have an inner scientist nor judge who determines what should be believed or why.
We put reputation over truth. Don’t expect humans to be truth-seeking in their reasoning - especially when reputation and selfishness is in play.
Reasoning evolved not to help find truth, but to win arguments and manipulate people. Skilled arguers support their views. Confirmation bias is built-in to the brain and nearly impossible to remove.
