Homo Sapiens Diverged from Homo Erectus Half a Million Years Ago

About half a million years ago, Homo Sapiens is noticeably divergent from Homo Erectus in skull characteristics. Sapiens had rounder, enlarged and less angular skulls.

These ancient Homo Sapiens were still wildly cruder than us, especially in technology (although they did use fire). They would become behaviorally modern about 450,000 years later (Humans of 50,000 Years Ago Were 'Modern'). What were they up to in between? (What Did Early Homo Sapiens Do For 450,000 Years?)
